What is Alternative Home Study (AHS)?

Family provides daily instruction in Math and/or English Language Arts with the support of a Supervising Teacher. HCS approved materials are selected in consultation with the family and ordered by the HCS Teacher to align with grade level standards, learner needs, and interests.

  • Students typically engage in daily literacy and math activities in HCS approved curriculum and complete assigned work: Grades K-2, 60-90 minutes for Math and ELA; Grades 3-5, 75-110 minutes for Math and ELA; Grades 6-8, 90-120 minutes for Math and ELA
  • Teachers work with families to develop the pacing and a personalized learning plan.
  • Teachers provide ongoing assessments, and review and evaluate student work and samples to provide feedback regarding student progress, pacing, and proficiency against grade level standards.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for social interaction, small group lessons as needed, and meet with families regularly to help manage instructional pacing, to monitor progress, and to guide student achievement.
